Chen Yong

Chen Yong is a Beijing and Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice is driven by a desire to express his perception of reality, personal uncertainties and aspirations for transformation.

Rather than working within a predetermined medium or artistic genre, Chen allows the idea and act of expression to determine the form of each work. His practice moves fluidly between spatial installation, painting, installation painting, paper cutting, sculpture and video, often incorporating digital technology, new materials and everyday objects.

This openness to medium reflects his interest in the changing relationship between contemporary life, technology and artistic expression. Chen’s works resist straightforward classification, instead creating layered encounters that invite viewers to consider different perspectives and emotional states.

At the centre of his practice is an interest in complexity — the space between reality and imagination, certainty and confusion, the familiar and the transformed. Rather than offering singular narratives or fixed interpretations, his works create environments and images through which viewers can form their own emotional and intellectual connections.

Working between Beijing and Los Angeles, Chen Yong brings together diverse cultural and visual influences, developing an evolving practice that continually questions what art can be and how it can respond to the world around us. His work ultimately seeks not simply to represent reality, but to explore, reinterpret and transform our experience of it.
