Whaingaroa Raglan-based artist and furniture maker Benjamin Grant works across sculptural and functional furniture, exploring the relationship between craftsmanship, material and form.
Grant combines a considered approach to making with a strong interest in the sculptural potential of furniture, creating pieces that sit between functional object and artwork. His practice reflects a deep engagement with timber, process and the tactile qualities of handmade work.
Alongside his own practice, Grant is a part-time tutor at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson, sharing his knowledge and experience with emerging makers. He was also a recipient of the Creative New Zealand Early Career Fund, supporting the development of his creative practice.
Based in Raglan, Grant runs Wood Works Raglan, where he continues to develop and produce his work. His practice brings together traditional woodworking knowledge with a contemporary sensibility, creating objects that are designed to be lived with, experienced and appreciated.
