Kirikiriroa Hamilton-based artist Ahsin Ahsin, of Cook Islands descent, works in a distinctive Neo-Pop style shaped by the visual culture of the 1980s and 1990s. His practice draws inspiration from sci-fi, street art, popular culture and the graphic language of his generation, bringing together bold imagery, vibrant colour and a strong sense of visual energy.
Ahsin’s work explores the space between the familiar and the imagined, often reworking elements of popular visual culture into contemporary compositions. His interest in sci-fi and street art brings a sense of movement, nostalgia and urban energy to his practice, while his Cook Islands heritage forms an important part of his cultural perspective and artistic identity.
Known for creating visually immediate and highly engaging works, Ahsin combines playful imagery with a more considered exploration of identity, culture and contemporary life. His Neo-Pop approach allows him to move freely between fine art, illustration and the visual language of popular culture.
Ahsin has presented solo exhibitions at City Gallery Wellington in 2024 and Tauranga Art Gallery in 2019, establishing a strong presence within Aotearoa’s contemporary art landscape.
Based in Kirikiriroa, his practice continues to evolve through an energetic dialogue between popular culture, cultural identity and contemporary art.
